Shelley Hughes, Residential Designer & Owner
Shelley is originally from Danville, Virginia, and has 15+ years of residential design experience. She graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture with a Minor in Urban Studies from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She studied in Italy with the schools’ international architectural program where she extensively toured the Mediterranean regions studying architecture. She worked part-time at various architectural firms and upon graduation accepted a full-time Project Management position with custom high-end residential architect Lindsay Daniel Architecture. She moved to Georgia in 2003 and continued her design experience with a small architecture firm in Rome, GA on a multitude of projects including residential, small commercial, churches, restaurants, medical offices, multi-family housing, and historic renovation. From there she moved to another large firm in Marietta Georgia, gaining experience designing medical offices and hospital renovations. She moved back to Charlotte in 2007 returning to her first employer, Lindsay Daniel, as Senior Project Manager after discovering her passion was in residential design and construction.
During her time working as a residential home designer, Shelley has become involved with many professional groups such as CORA, NARI, HBA, etc. which represents a wide cross-section of the residential building industry including residential builders, real estate agents, architects, designers, and other residential industry professionals that have a passion for trying to make the residential building industry better as a whole by working together in a collaborative effort. Shelley has studied and trained with the Building Performance Institute through a member in these groups and jumped head first into learning more about building science and the home performance industry by immediately getting training as a Building Performance Institute (BPI) Building Analyst and Envelop Professional and Weatherization (Whole House Air Leakage Control or WHALC). She does not perform home energy audits as part of her business but is better prepared as a designer to educate her clients about the benefits of these practices and designs higher quality projects as a result of the training and education received through her career and collaboration on various projects with many other professionals.
She is currently the head of her own residential design company which was originally based in Charlotte, NC but has moved to central Colorado for new adventures and inspiration. She still takes on projects in Charlotte regularly and has staff in Charlotte to assist but also focusing on new ideas and projects in the Denver, Colorado metro area too. She works on a variety of projects in the residential sector with like-minded architects and engineering colleagues.
